GEO Epoche, Gruner & Jahr, D, Bronze Award 9. ICMA

Category 4.6. Concept

The editorial staff writes: “GEO Epoche – that is six times a year a time travel into the nearer or further past, with thoroughly researched texts and  grandiose pictures. Historical reconstructions, often loosened up by maps and info boxes, as well as opulent picture essays bring the respec-tive epoch to life – all packed into varied layouts.”

Jury statement: “The timetable is a highlight in every issue. It is printed on uncoated paper, which sets it apart from the rest of the magazine. It contains the facts in chronological order. Typographically perfectly solved, thought through down to the smallest detail. The bookmark is part of it, because on one side the actors are introduced, on the other a short chronology.”

JS Magazin, Gemeinschaftswerk der Evangelischen Publizistik gGmbH, D, Bronze Award 8. ICMA

Category 4.6. Concept

The jury is impressed by the concept of the JS magazine, because it is no easy task to reach young soldiers with “official” media. The skilful mixture of private and official topics is what makes JS Magazine so appealing. Example: Issue 11/2016: “What else no one talks about” is the headline. Topic: Military priests explain how they talk to soldiers about killing. The story is not presented visually with photos, but with illustrations.

Category 4.7. Front Pages

Left: The Brexit triggered a wave of dry humour in the British, a species well known to the Czechs.

Centre: Trump‘s triumph. White House politics as spaghetti westerns.

Right: Angela, you can‘t do it! Topic: People from Chemnitz have their say. “We are not Nazis, we are only afraid of immigration and the small lies of German media.”

Category 4.8. Cover and Coverstory

„Hoch hinaus“ – „High above“ is the headline. Opening credits: „Global warming knows no pardon. The Valais, the region with the most glaciers in the Alps, also has to sweat. However, the loss of ice creates new opportunities for hikers in particular. Between the Matter Valley and the Saas Valley, our author has reached undreamt-of heights“.

Category 4.8. Cover and Coverstory

GEO Epoche, Gruner & Jahr GmbH, D, Silber Award 9. ICMA

Category 4.9. Typography · Layout

Jury statement: “The Story is about witch-hunts. For visualization, copper engravings from the 16th and 17th centuries are used, which are partially dyed yellow. The colour tone runs through the article, because parts of the text are also coloured yellow. Very good font selection, very good page layout.”

e x, Hochschule Augsburg, D, Silver Award 8. ICMA

Category 4.9. Typography · Layout

The “e x Magazin” is developed and produced by students of the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. Under the magazine’s motto “Think Big”, nine former students are portrayed at their places of work. The magazine has a very clear layout and uses a minimum of stylistic elements: Pastel shades, full-page pictures, left-justified texts, which are generously laid out. The makers allow themselves a single “gag” – a deviation from the purist style: the page numbers are very large and they are cut off at the bottom.

Mare 124, mareverlag GmbH & Co. oHG, D, Award of Excellence 9. ICMA

Category 4.11. Photo Report

The life of a human being is reconstructed on the basis of the contents of a sailor‘s box. In the introduction it says: “These are the little things that had accumulated over time and which Manfred Renninger left behind when he disappeared from the Hamburg Seamen‘s Mission in 2008. Is it possible to characterise a person on the basis of what is in his sea chest? Can objects tell the story of a life and disappearance?” Objects from the box are placed on a white back-ground and photographed. Very exciting realisation. The objects start telling stories.

Mare 126, mareverlag GmbH & Co. oHG, D, Award of Excellence 9. ICMA

Category 4.11. Photo Report

The photo report is about the Antarctic station “Neumayer III”. The opening credits read: “It looks like a spaceship that landed in the snow: the station ‘Neumayer III‘. Here, in the midst of ice-cold nothingness, scientists are getting data that will help us understand the Earth better. The photographer shows the environment in the most delicate colours. Antarctica doesn‘t look like a dangerous place for people, but vulnerable and endangered.
